How can you cross pollinate flowers? Can you cross pollinate two different flowers like rose to yellowbell ?

December 302009

Me and my group mates have this project we need to work on. We decided on cross pollination of flowers. And we were wondering if we can cross pollinate two different kinds of flowers.

Nope, sorry. That would be like trying to get a cow to mate with a cat. Just not a good match of genes. The flowers need to be of the same species. You need to take pollen from one flower and apply it to the sticky part on the other flower.

Can I take my wedding flowers outside for the wedding pictures without killing them?

December 302009

I’m getting married in a church and then going over to the reception hall to take the wedding pictures outside in February. I was wondering if there was anyway I could do that without killing my flowers immediately?

Covering your flowers with a bag while moving from one building to another will prevent them from getting frost nipped. If your bouquet is compact, a brown grocery bag will work fine. If it’s large or has a lot of stuff hanging down then you’ll have to resort to a couple dry cleaning bags.
If the weather is not freezing then you may not have to worry about it (don’t forget about the wind, though). A floral cooler is often as cold as 38F.

How to create outdoor flower baskets from silk flowers?

December 302009

HI
I would like to create a few flower arrangements from silk flowers for use outside on deck and porch to compliment the real flowers. I have been pretty successful when displaying in vases (although I have to regularly dump out rainwater) but I’d like to create arrangements like flower baskets and plant pots. I’m not sure what to use to anchor the flowers in that will not be ruined or rotted by rainwater but also won’t be too heavy to lift. I know that indoor arrangements have some sort of foam or similar material but I wasn’t sure if this would work outside.

Any suggestions???

I use pretty pots and use what ever size styrofoam I need from the art and crafts department. Then I put some mulch on top. Then I create my flower arrangement. The styrofoam last a very long time and does not rot. Never have any problems doing it this way. Hope I helped you some.

How does the kurinji flower blooms once in 12 years but they are at different growth stages?

kurinji flower(strobilanthes kunthianus) blooms only once in 12 years. But we plant every year, simultaneous flowering are not get. Duing flowering in 12 years, the plants are at different growth stages like one plant is in 5 year old and other is in 12 years old. What’s the mechanism to induce flowering of plants of different sages?

There are to find a lot of very interesting publications about Strobilanthes kunthianus, but I could`not find one dealing with flowering hormones or other flower evocation.
This article, "Mass flowering and pollinators of Strobilanthes consanguinea in the Western Ghats, South India" says: "Mass flowering plants in general and Strobilanthes species in particular, may end up with little amount or no seed set in bloom when environmental parameters are not favourable and pollinators are not available."

And it also mentions: "Gamble reported that the mass blooming Strobilanthes species grow so densely that the seedlings of the forest trees could hardly survive under them.
http://www.ias.ac.in/currsci/jun252007/1680.pdf

So it could be that the oldest of your plants starts to bloom ( at the first after 6 years ) as soon as the environmental conditions are best for theirs seeds and the number of pollinators is high enough, and it dies after seed dispersal.
The others "wait" till conditions are optimal again and the second oldest or healthiest has a turn.

How can an American send flowers to a girl in Paris?

December 302009

I want to send flowers to my girlfriend in Paris for her birthday(February 12th), but I live in Miami. We’re both teenagers, so that might rule out a couple of solutions. Any ideas?

And if possible, I would prefer to send her something small, not enormous Bouquets.

How do you dry out fresh flowers?

December 302009

My mom told me to ask this question lol. How do you dry out fresh flowers?

Air drying is the easiest method to preserve & dry flowers. Arrange flowers together as you would in the vase.
Tie them at the end with a string or rubber band. Tie to a hanger so that your flowers hang upside down. You can spray the flowers with hairspray or spray Gel to help in drying process, but it isn’t necessary .
Hang your flowers upside down for about two weeks in an area that has a good air circulation, has average room temperature, & doesn’t have a lot of light.
Also it’s not necessary, but If you want the flowers to have a nice shine, you can spray them with a clear gloss you get from a craft store, after the flowers have dried.

"The simplest way to preserve flowers is air drying. Gather material throughout the growing season. Once harvested, strip the foliage from the stems. Tie the stems into small bunches with rubber bands. Hang the loose bunches upside down in a warm, dry, well-ventilated place, such as an attic or shed. (Harvested flowers are usually hung to dry so that the stems dry straight.) Dry the plant material until it is thoroughly dry, usually 2 to 3 weeks."
This site list plants that dry & preserve well:

Another way to preserve flowers is to use Silica Gel or other drying agents such as sand or cornmeal plus borax. Using this method is said to preserve the blossom more true to its original color and shape. You can use a mixture of borax and white cornmeal (2:1) or borax and sand (2:1) as a drying agent instead of Silica Gel. "These methods are “trial and error” because the flowers can be burned if embedded too long. About 10 days is the average if cornmeal is used, and about 16 days of drying is needed if sand is used."

Cut off most of the stem.Use container which can be sealed and place an inch or so of silica in the container’s bottom. Place the blossom upright and atop the silica layer. Gently separate the petals, positioning them to a desired final shape, and sprinkle additional silica around and in between each petal. Seal the container for 3 to 5 days, depending on the size of the bloom. Check the bloom periodically, but remember to recover it with the silica after each check. "It takes between two days and a week for flowers to dry, the length of time depends entirely on the type of flower you are drying, and I have discovered the best results are obtained by only drying one type of flower per container as those with thick fleshy petals will take longer to dry than those with thin papery petals."

Whats a good price to charge (as a delivery man w/ a van) to deliver flowers during the holidays?

December 302009

Ok, so I have a nice sized empty moving van.
A flourist wants to pay delivery people to deliver flowers during the holidays. What’s a good price to charge? Consider it’s the holidays and gas prices are high. Do I charge per run? Per flower piece? What’s the scoop?

50 cents per mile plus an hourly rate since you cannot do it by the per each delivery because of different distances between delivery..or 10.00 an hour plus 50 cents a mile when you have multiple deliveries…
